Keeping it real in the shires
Many Golborne residents remember a certain young man, now a parliamentary candidate in Hammersmith, in his early days. He once called himself 'spoilt rotten' and 'gobby and dangerous' during a radio interview. Who are we to contradict him?
It must be said that his constant stigmatisation of the area he was born in as a 'ghetto' has not exactly endeared him to his former neighbours, one of whom calls him 'a free-loading scumbag', another 'the most hated man in North Kensington'.
Golborne ward, where he currently lives, is generally accepted to be a richly diverse and stable neighbourhood, and Wornington Green, where he lived for a period, has been called 'an exemplar diverse and cohesive community'. It also has the lowest crime rate of the whole borough.
So, not exactly a 'ghetto' then.
When the Evening Standard reported that the Hammersmith candidate was taking riding lessons so he could go fox-hunting in the shires (which was surely a prank) many found it entirely believable. So if you click on the link below and listen to him saying 'this is my posh voice', without a trace of irony .... well, make up your own mind.
Who can say where this man will ever fit in, however hard he tries? One day he is the 'token ghetto boy' standing behind D Cameron, the next 'looking interested' beside G Osborne. Ever felt used?
Two things are certain. One is that his current posse of public school buddies will drop him like a hot potato if he doesn't get elected. The other is that he will no longer be welcome in North Ken if he does.
Nostalgie de la boue. No going back now.
